Short stay Schengen visa is valid for all the states in the Schengen region and has the same rules across the borders of the 26 countries that come under the Schengen agreement.
Which country do citizens need a Schengen visa?
Any person who is traveling to the Schengen states for around 90-days requires a Schengen visa depending upon the visa requirements of the country in which he or she is currently residing.
Countries for whose Passport holders must have a Schengen visa:
Here is a list of the countries for whose citizens it is obligatory to apply for the Schengen visa and get accepted. They cannot cross the external borders of the Schengen region without the Schengen visa. These countries are 105 in total.
|Belize||Egypt||Kyrgyzstan||Papua New Guinea|
|Burkina Faso||Gabon||Libya||Sao Tome And Principe|
|Cape Verde||Guyana||Mauritania||South Africa|
|Central African Republic||Haiti||Mongolia||Srilanka|
Countries for which a Schengen visa is not a requirement:
Other than the Schengen region countries, there are twenty-nine countries in the world whose citizens are exempted from getting the Schengen visa when crossing Schengen borders.
|Albania (Only when the passport is biometric)||El Salvador||Moldova(Only when the passport is biometric)|
|Andorra||North Macedonia(Only when the passport is biometric)||Monaco|
|Antigua and Barbuda||Georgia(Only when the passport is biometric)||Montenegro(Only when the passport is biometric)|
|Bahamas||Vatican City State||Palau|

However, all the people who are residing in these states don’t automatically get exempted from getting the Schengen visa. For instance, a US green card holder whose roots go back to a region which doesn’t come under the list of the countries that are allowed to have visa-free Schengen entry must apply for the Schengen visa.
Not only that, if a US passport holder has been refused to make entry to the Schengen region, due to any reason, must also apply for the Schengen visa at the consulate or embassy of the selected destination. Same goes for other parts of the world.
Different Schengen states’ embassies and consulates worldwide only provide Schengen visa to the foreigners living in the current country when they have a temporary or permanent residence permit.
Others who Don’t Need a Schengen Visa

- British protected persons (BPP)
